How to Choose the Right Lighting for Every Room

Aug 26, 2026

Good lighting does more than fill a room with brightness — it sets the mood, makes tasks easier, and can completely change how a space feels. Here's how we recommend approaching it, room by room.

Start with layers, not just one fixture

Every room benefits from three types of lighting: ambient (overall light, like a ceiling fixture or chandelier), task (focused light for cooking, reading, or working), and accent (light that highlights art, shelving, or architecture). Relying on a single overhead light is the most common reason a room feels flat or harsh.

Match brightness to the room

As a rough guide, kitchens and workspaces do best around 3000–4000K (a crisp white light) for task clarity, while living rooms and bedrooms feel warmer and more relaxing between 2200–2700K. If you're unsure, warmer light is almost always the safer, cozier choice for spaces where people gather.

Don't forget dimmers and scale

A dimmer switch turns one fixture into several moods — bright for cleaning, low for movie night. And when it comes to size, a pendant or chandelier should generally be about half the width of the table or surface it hangs over, so it feels proportional rather than lost or overwhelming.
